Awards will be granted to five master’s students and five doctoral students from each ESA Section (two from P-IE) to showcase their research in the Rising Stars of Entomology Award Symposium (RSEAS) at the ESA Annual Meeting. This award is intended for graduate students who are near the end of their programs. Students will have the opportunity to expand upon their research beyond the restrictive 10-minutes of the student competitions and gain valuable experience for future career presentations. In addition to giving a featured 30-minute presentation, students will be awarded free registration to the annual meeting and free membership to the Entomological Society of America for the following year.

The evolutionary biologist and polymath J.B.S. Haldane is said to have remarked that “The universe is not only queerer than we imagine but queerer than we can imagine.” And one of those many queer things is that there are more species of beetles than any other kind of animal on our planet. This queer fact also apparently did not escape Haldane’s notice and repartee. Replying to theologians who inquired if there was anything that could be concluded about the Creator from the study of creation, Haldane is said to have quipped, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.”

LAWRENCE A University of Kansas expert on the evolutionary history and diversity of insects will present his distinguished professor Inaugural Lecture, “400 Million Years on Six Legs: Evolution of the Insects,” on Thursday, April 29.
Michael Engel is a University Distinguished Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and senior curator in the KU Biodiversity Institute, a rank he has held since 2018. He is also a courtesy professor in the Department of Geology and the Museum Studies Program.
The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. and be recorded for those unable to attend the virtual event and posted to the Faculty Development website. Individuals can register to attend the virtual Zoom webinar.
