President Joe Biden nominated Native American law expert Robert Anderson, an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, to be solicitor of the Interior Department Wednesday.
The move underscored how the administration is putting a priority on placing Native Americans in charge of the agenda at Interior. Last month, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo, was confirmed by the Senate as the first Native American person to lead a federal department.
âBob has extensive legal expertise with regard to Native American Tribes, public lands, and water â all of which will help advance Interiorâs mission to steward Americaâs natural, cultural and historic resources and honor our nation-to-nation relationship with Tribes in accordance with the spirit and letter of the law,â Haaland said in a statement.
Everyone over the age of 16 recently became eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Wisconsin, but tribal health departments have been offering vaccinations to tribal and non-tribal members over 18 for weeks.
While demand far outweighed supply earlier this year, it appears they are starting to balance out and there are even surplus vaccines available on some days at tribal health clinics.
“We have started to see demand for COVID-19 vaccination plateau a bit,” said Michelle Myers, public health officer for the Oneida Nation.
The Oneida Health Department received its first shipments of vaccines in late December and started immediately vaccinating all of the residents of its assisted living facility, and more than three-fourths of its health care workers were vaccinated by mid-February.
