A Rice County social worker had moved to have the man committed after he suffered a mental health crisis and nearly set himself on fire.

Charges have been dropped against a man who was accused of terrifying staff at the Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital emergency room, because he is believed to be mentally unfit to stand trial.
Mark Thomas Hawanchak, 51, of Northfield, was charged in Becker County District Court with felony threats of violence, misdemeanor fifth-degree assault and misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal damage to property.
