Commentary: Adele Keim - Seeking justice, regardless of the price Adele Keim FacebookTwitterEmail Wise words from Taylor Swift, who was name-dropped not by TMZ, but by the U.S. Supreme Court. What’s the price tag on constitutional rights? That was the question the justices were discussing when Justice Elena Kagan brought up Swift and her case against a radio host she accused of improperly touching her. Swift asked the court for just $1, which in legalspeak is called nominal damages a small amount of compensation to acknowledge important but hard-to-measure harm. Swift won her case, and Chike Uzuegbunam, a college student at the Supreme Court, should also win his. Campus police at Georgia Gwinnett College threatened him with arrest if he didn’t stop talking to his classmates about Jesus in public, even when he was standing in the school’s tiny “free speech zone” (just 0.0015% of campus). After the school shut down his efforts to resolve the situation, Uzuegbunam sued.

Washington D.C., Sep 28, 2018 / 03:30 pm (CNA).- Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), one of the few prolife members of the Deomcratic Party with a seat in Congress, has spoken about his commitment to life issues and his concern at the increasing divide between the two major parties. The congressman spoke at an event entitled Being a Faithful Catholic as a Public Servant on Sept. 27. The event was hosted at the Catholic University of America and sponsored by the university’s Institute for Human Ecology. Lipinski, along with CUA Professor Joseph Capizzi, discussed what life is like in Washington for one of the last remaining Blue Dog Democrats, and how his party has shifted to the point of effectively trying to force people like him out. He has represented Illinois’ 3rd district for the last 14 years, a time in which he says divisiveness and polarization has gotten worse.

Disability cannot be grounds for voluntary euthanasia, UN officials say

Lincoln, Neb., Mar 31, 2019 / 04:01 pm (CNA).- If you ask a Nebraskan how the historic floods over the past few weeks have affected them, they are likely to count their blessings, and to tell you that it could have been worse. They’ll thank God for sparing their lives, rather than curse him for the destruction of their homes or the washing away of their cattle. It’s not, so much, a reflection of the severity of the disastrous flooding (which covered a third of the state at its peak, and will likely cost hundreds of millions of dollars in property, crop and livestock losses), but rather a reflection of the faith and indomitability found in many a Nebraskan soul.

WINDSOR TERRACE Last week, a federal ruling in North Dakota flew under the radar that allows Catholic medical professionals, hospitals and organizations the right to refuse performing or providing insurance coverage for gender transition procedures, or insurance coverage for gender transition drugs, if it violates their religious beliefs. The ruling was on a 2016 lawsuit filed by the Catholic Benefits Association an association of 65 Catholic dioceses and 1,100 Catholic church affiliates and private business owners against the United States Department of Health and Human Services over what is known as the “transgender mandate” of the Affordable Care Act.
