SAN ANTONIO – A 24-year-old woman who Bexar County Sheriff’s Office investigators said was killed over a cellphone is being remembered as someone who was always smiling and had a bright future.
Almost immediately after enrolling in The Salon Professional Academy, Giovanna Barrera gained a reputation as someone who gave it her all.
“Giovanna was very passionate,” said Melanie Meador, operations director at the academy. “She knew that this was what she was going to do the rest of her life.”

According to the sheriff’s office, Giovanna Barrera, 24, was fatally shot in the 7600 block of Tarrasa Wednesday afternoon minutes after she finished roller-skating. She was shot one time in the head at close range over her cellphone, Salazar said.
Salazar said Barrera was getting into her vehicle when Calvillo allegedly approached her and demanded her cellphone. Barrera refused to give it to him and threw the phone under the seat of the car where it was later found, Salazar said.
