Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Friday said that India strongly condemns the killing of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui in Afghanistan. Speaking at an event of the United Nations Security Council, Shringla raised concerns about violence against civilians during armed conflict.
Siddiqui, who worked for Reuters news agency, was killed while covering a clash between Afghan security forces and the Taliban on Friday. The 38-year-old was in the border town of Spin Boldak with Afghan security forces when he was caught in Taliban crossfire, an Afghan commander told Reuters.

Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath on Thursday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi amid speculation over his future role in the party.
Nath s name is doing the rounds for a bigger role in the revamped Congress organisation.

Nath has been a veteran of the party and shares good ties with senior party leaders including those part of the group of 23 leaders who had written to the Congress chief seeking the organisation s overhaul.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the state has spent Rs 1,000 crore from its own fund for relief and rehabilitation of Cyclone Yaas affected people in coastal areas of three districts. She regretted that the Centre did not provide even a small part of the Rs 20,000 crore relief package sought by the state for the large-scale devastation caused by the cyclone in May. They (the central government) are referring to a Rs 300 crore grant. They did not release it for cyclone relief but as part of the advance fund due to the state (before the calamity), she told reporters.
