Pegida and the 2015 refugee crisis
Pegida was founded in October 2014 with xenophobic protests every Monday evening which gathered momentum during the refugee crisis of 2015. At the time, Germany became deeply divided over Chancellor Angela Merkel s decision to accept hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers.
The Saxony-based movement s popularity coincided with the rise of the far-right AfD party, which entered Germany s national Parliament for the first time in 2017 on an anti-immigration platform.
Pegida has previously been declared extremist and put under observation by intelligence services in other German states such as Bavaria.
Meanwhile, Lutz Bachmann, who founded the group and remains one if its most prominent members, has faced multiple convictions for sedition.

Violent and racist crimes are on the up in Germany, according to official statistics on politically motivated crimes. Crimes by right-wing extremists hit their highest levels since records began in 2001.

Germany s Interior Minister Horst Seehofer presented the official statistics for politically motivated crimes committed in 2020 on Tuesday.
The minister expressed concerns over increasing incidences of politically motivated crimes, especially those carried out by right-wing extremists, such as the murder of 11 young people with immigrant heritage in the city of Hanau in February last year.

At least 700 people who participated in an illegal rally against COVID-19 restrictions in the southern German city of Stuttgart over the weekend have been identified, arrested and then released, police said late Saturday.
The city and regional German courts had banned demonstrations this weekend due to the higher risk of spreading the virus.
