The Good:
Since I retired in 2007, Jim and I have traveled each year for a month or so during âmud season,â with the exception of last year. We have a 24-foot travel trailer that accompanies us. We have created a lot of memories over the years and one day when we can no longer travel, we will look back on our adventures and smile.
Each year we try to expand our horizons by visiting places that we have never been to before. Our good friends, Bill and Joyce May, met us in Holbrook, Arizona, and spent three days with us as we explored the area along Route 66. A highlight was Petrified Forest National Park, fossil trees that were alive more than 200 million years ago and a vast landscape of colorful badlands. Of course we had to stop in âStandinâ on the Corner in Winslow, Arizona.â The corner was made famous by the song âTake it Easyâ which was a huge hit for the classic rock band the Eagles.

Petrified wood is a fossil that is the remains of ancient vegetation, most commonly ancient trees. It occurs by a natural action known as permineralization, a process in which mineral deposits take on the shape within the cells of organic tissue. These minerals replace all the organic materials of the ancient trees, most commonly with a silicate such as quartz.

Petrified wood is a 3-D fossil representation of the original living organism. The petrification process occurs deep underground where the wood has become buried by sediments, blocking off any source of oxygen and thus stopping the oxygen-fueled decomposition or the organic matter. Petrification requires four basic materials: water, wood, mud and volcanic ash.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, and whether you are looking for a way to commemorate service members who died on active duty in a war or take advantage of the long holiday weekend, you have options.
After the pandemic canceled most Memorial Day ceremonies last year, including at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona and Pioneer and Military Memorial Park, some venues have cautiously decided to reopen this year. While the former is only open to invited guests, the latter is welcoming the public while forgoing a ceremony.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says those who are fully vaccinated can safely resume indoor and outdoor activities without face coverings, except as required by “federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.”
