Petrol Diesel Excise Duty News: Excise Duty Collections On Petrol, Diesel, Gas Spiralled 96% Since FY14

Petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in 2010 and 2014 respectively. The spiralling petrol, diesel and gas prices have severely dented domestic budgets across the country, and the continuous hike in excise duty on petrol, diesel and cooking gas by the Centre in the past seven years has been the main reason behind the high cost of these commodities which are most essential for common man s consumption. While people have been burdened, between 2013-14 and 2020-21, there has been an astounding 96 per cent increase in excise duty collection on these commodities. According to official figures, the excise duty collection on the three essential commodities was Rs 12,35,870 crore in 2013-14. However by 2020-21 (till January 2021), these collections had gone up to Rs 24,23,020 crore, an increase of 96 per cent over the 2013-14 figures.

Petrol, Diesel Prices At Record Highs: Amid High Fuel Prices, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Urges OPEC To Ease Production Cuts

Retail prices of heavily taxed petrol and diesel in the country have touched record highs India has urged OPEC and allied oil producers to ease production cuts as higher crude prices are hitting fuel demand in Asia s third-largest economy and adding to inflation, its oil minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, said on Wednesday. The price-sensitive Indian consumers are affected by rising petroleum product prices, Pradhan said ahead of a March 4 policy-setting meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, known as OPEC+. Oil has been supported in the past few weeks by OPEC+ supply curbs and hopes of a demand rebound due to COVID-19 vaccinations. Benchmark Brent crude rose to $64.72 a barrel at 1237 GMT. 

Petrol, Diesel Rates Hiked For Sixth Straight Day; Petrol Crosses Rs 95/Litre Mark In Mumbai

₹ 83.81 In the last six days, fuel prices have gone up by ₹ 1.8 per litre and ₹ 1.88 per litre for petrol and diesel respectively. With the continuous revision in fuel rates, petrol prices on Sunday breached ₹ 95-mark and diesel too surpassed ₹ 86-mark in Mumbai. Customers in Mumbai will now have to pay ₹ 95.21 per litre for one-litre petrol and for diesel they will have to shell out ₹ 86.06 for a litre. The fuel rates have been hiked for the sixth straight day which came into effect from 6 am today. The retail price of petrol in Kolkata went up by 28 paise to ₹ 90.01 per litre from ₹ 89.73 per litre and diesel retails at ₹ 82.65 per litre. In Chennai and Bengaluru, petrol retailed at ₹ 90.96 and ₹ 91.70 respectively. On the other hand, diesel retailed at ₹ 84.16 in Chennai and ₹ 83.81 in Bengaluru.
