After Congress declined to allocate $3 billion of the recent economic stimulus package to fill the government’s emergency stockpile of oil, the Trump administration has taken its own steps to provide short-term relief to the U.S. petroleum sector.
The Department of Energy announced last week it would be making arrangements to immediately store 30 million barrels of oil in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), a backup reserve created in the 1970s as a buffer against oil supply disruptions. Now, instead of supply shortages, oil markets are facing what consulting firm Rystad Energy is calling “one of the biggest oil supply gluts the world has ever seen.”

PESA and AESC combine to form Energy Workforce & Technology Council 2/1/2021
HOUSTON - The Petroleum Equipment & Services Association (PESA) and the Association of Energy Service Companies (AESC) announced they will combine to create a new organization, the Energy Workforce & Technology Council.
The Council will represent more than 600 energy technology and services companies in the global energy supply chain providing solutions to enable a low-carbon future, safely, profitably, and sustainably. Industry-recognized workforce development opportunities through trainings, certifications, best-practice sharing and standards development from the legacy organizations of PESA and AESC will continue to be a flagship of the new Council. The organization will elevate and promote the vital role this sector plays in the economy, the innovative technology it develops and deploys, and its leading role in the energy transition.

Even though economic activity is expected to pick back as the coronavirus vaccine becomes available to the public, the Energy Information Agency predicts natural gas demand and production will be in decline through 2022.
The most recent short-term outlook from the agency says in 2020 natural gas consumption was down 2.5% from the previous year. The EIA expects consumption to fall by 2.8% this year, and 2.1% in 2022. The largest natural gas-consuming sector in the United States is the electric power sector, the Outlook report reads, noting that the EIA estimates the power sector will consume 11% less natural gas this year than in 2020.
