Prayer Intention: For all young people
There is a story of the discovery of a statue in October 1717. The Governor of the Province of San Paolo was passing through the area – a small town in the river valley.
The people of that town decided to hold a feast in his honour and three fishermen went down to the river. They prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception that God would grant a good catch after a run of bad luck. Casting their nets into the river they dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue was black. They also salvaged the head. The fishermen named the statue Our Lady of the Conception who appeared. Neighbours began to venerate the statue and devotion grew. The first chapel was built in 1745.
Pope sends condolences on the death of Brazilian Cardinal Scheid
Pope Francis sends a telegramme of condolence on the death of Cardinal Eusebio Oscar Scheid, Archbishop emeritus of the Metropolitan See of San Sebastian, of Rio de Janerio, Brazil.
By Vatican News staff writer
In a telegramme to the current Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta, O. Cist., Pope Francis says he received with deep regret the news of Cardinal Scheid’s death.
He also offers “prayerful solidarity” to all the faithful who found him to be “a zealous pastor.”
The Pope writes that the late Cardinal’s Episcopal motto is “God is Good,” which he says, “Reminds us of God’s goodness to His Church.” He adds, “This remembrance is truly consoling when we remember beloved Eusebio’s gift that served the people of God so diligently, having been the first Bishop of São José dos Campos.”
