The Ministry of Health and Wellness has denied approval for the 28th staging of the Purewater/JC/R. Danny Williams Invitational Development Meet amidst the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The meet, which over the years signalled the start of the local track and field season, was scheduled for Saturday at the JC Ashenheim Stadium, but on Thursday health authorities said it was not safe to go ahead with the meet.
The Ted Dwyer Classics, which was also scheduled for Saturday, also did not receive approval from health authorities. That meet was set for the Courtney Walsh Oval at Excelsior High School.

With just two days before the official start of the 2021 local track and field season, the first meet on the calendar is yet to get government approval.
The 2020 season was disrupted in March as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and after a four-month hiatus, track and field returned with a series of meets staged by the MVP Track Club under strict COVID-19 protocols by health authorities.
With health officials expecting a spike in COVID-19 cases due to the Christmas season when certain restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus were relaxed, the 2021 local track and field season is scheduled to kick off on Saturday at Jamaica College (JC), with the JC Invitational Development Meet - pending a signoff from health authorities.
