Azócar Catrón: It s Not the Scale of the Project, But Rather the Scale of the Landscape

Image © Patricio Zeiss Fabián Dejtiar (FD): You both focus on areas with a lot of natural elements but that are often undervalued and ignored by the community. What drew you to working within these areas? Azócar Catrón (AC): The public facet of architecture has always interested us, whether talking about buildings or public spaces and it was this focus that gave us our start in launching our first project “Two Towers and a Trail” fpr a contest where our goal was to transform a place that, during our childhood, was a place to play and explore but had been transformed into a communal garbage dump.

Marion Weiss: You Could Spend 30% Less and With Good Design, Do Something That s 200% Better

Copy The Second Studio (formerly The Midnight Charette) is an explicit podcast about design, architecture, and the everyday. Hosted by Architects David Lee and Marina Bourderonnet, it features different creative professionals in unscripted conversations that allow for thoughtful takes and personal discussions. A variety of subjects are covered with honesty and humor: some episodes are interviews, while others are tips for fellow designers, reviews of buildings and other projects, or casual explorations of everyday life and design. The Second Studio is also available on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube. This week David and Marina are joined by Marion Weiss, architect and co-founder of Weiss/Manfredi. Marion discusses her childhood interests in the arts, architecture, and landscape design, how her office was formed and its design process, working with clients on large cultural projects, how architecture can have a social impact beyond its physical footprint, and more. Enjoy!

Why Lacaton & Vassal Won the 2021 Pritzker Prize

Copy Pritzker Prize 2021 Laureates, French architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, founders of Lacaton & Vassal, are known for their “never demolish” principle and their notion of sustainability embodied in a three-pillar balance: economic, environmental, and social. In this exclusive video for ArchDaily, Martha Thorne, executive director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and Dean of IE School of Architecture and Design, shares some of the reasons why Lacaton & Vassal has won the Pritzker Prize 2021. As founders of the Paris-based architecture firm, Lacaton and Vassal have completed over 30 projects throughout Europe and West Africa, ranging from private cultural and academic institutions to public spaces, social housing, and urban developments. One of their most relevant works, the transformation of 530 dwellings in Bordeaux, won the 2019 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award by proving how far their “never demolish” principle can go.

Project Galath3a: a Woman-Machine Collaboration at the Berlin Open Lab

Robotic Mirroring process that studies human-gestures, by recording and translating actions into a machine-path. With the robot as mimic, Mirroring, the designers question the nature of these behaviors: are they necessary? Should it be passed on? If so, how could we enhance it to empower women? Design proposal: Set design for “The Robot Salon”. Image Courtesy of Gili Ron and Irina Bogdan The name of the project relates to the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Galatea is the image of the perfect woman created by sculptor Pygmalion, for his pleasure. […] We wanted to reverse this relationship. Here, the instrument is regarded as equal and is invited to partake in co-creation. This way we challenge the image of women in the digital age moving away from perfection, away from the male gaze, and into kinship of women and machines. Gili Ron and Irina Bogdan
