CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio â This pandemic has been a story of numbers. The death toll, the infection rate, the business closures, and the layoffs have all been tracked closely.
And of the people who have lost their jobs or left the workforce, women have been disproportionately impacted.
Julie Vandegrift is keenly aware of how much women have done during the last year in a pandemic.

“COVID-19 did not create the child care crisis, it exacerbated it, and it exposed the racial disparities with regard to providers, with workers, and to families,” she said.
Ninety percent of child care providers, she noted, are women or people of color, and frequently get by on very thin margins. The $13.5 billion Congress approved for child care in the past year, she said, was not enough to meet their needs.
Republicans have readily offered support for some efforts to boost child care and help more women get back into the labor force economy, while emphasizing the need to reopen schools.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines has joined a global initiative to boost women’s representation in the aviation industry to at least 25% by 2025.
The airline joined the “25by2025” initiative by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that aims to create more career opportunities for women and champion gender balance in the aviation industry.
The 25by2025 initiative, a platform to share best practices and to monitor the industry’s goals and push for a gender-balanced workplace, has 57 signatories globally to date.
“We must consciously avoid stereotyping a job to a particular gender, which tends to be the norm in a male-dominated industry, ” said Malaysia Airlines group chief executive officer Captain Izham Ismail.
