The question of women s suffrage in the U.S. had been debated long before the movement s humble beginnings at the Seneca Falls convention of 1848. Part 1 of this edition on the Women s Suffrage Movement outlines the movement s early years, with the first generation of suffragists getting their start in the abolition movement. After the Civil War, suffrage groups would become divided due to opposing ideas on strategies, resulting in the formation of two rival groups: the American Woman Suffrage Association, and the National Woman Suffrage Association. Although progress in the western states would influence states in the east to pursue women s suffrage, results in the early years were mixed.

2020 was quite the year for science fiction, but it wasn’t all about escaping to other worlds. It’s easy to imagine flights of fancy in a spaceship to be a reprieve to reality, but science fiction and fantasy literature is the product of people with real concerns about the real world, and accordingly, they write about the challenges that we see in the world around us. Over the last 12 months, I’ve been thinking about the value of speculative literature in a time like this. There’s a meme going around that reading is a collective hallucination that we get by staring at bits of a dead tree. That’s certainly accurate, but I like to think of science fiction as a sort of cheat guide or rough map of directions.
5 Face your fears, use your voice, and define your legacy were three of the themes of the guest speaker at the Women s History Month event, March 12, at the Maj. Gen. Emmett J. Bean Federal Center.
Thresette Briggs, the guest speaker, shared her experiences of being raised in poverty in a single-parent home to overcoming her humble beginnings to become a college-educated businesswoman, mentor to others and motivational speaker. She also engaged the audience in some participation exercises.
This year s national theme was Valiant Women of the Vote, which honors those who fought for suffrage rights for women. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that allowed women to vote in all federal and state elections.
