As I See It: Oregon needs to fully fund public health

Area Law Enforcement Works with Mental Health Providers - The Corvallis Advocate

Area Law Enforcement Works with Mental Health Providers January 11, 2021 Over the last decade or so, mental health awareness has been on the rise, which has led to partnerships between organizations looking to provide more well-rounded care to all people. One of these partnerships is between law enforcement and mental health professionals. In Benton County, Corvallis Police Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Department, and Benton County Behavioral Health (BCBH) all work together to help provide the best level of support possible.    Captain Don Rogers of the Benton County Sheriff’s Department told The Advocate, “Those of us who work in Criminal Justice and the Mental Health professions have long recognized the need to address persons in crisis and recognize making an arrest is not always the most beneficial way to help the person or the community.”

Navigating a Psychotic Episode in Benton County - The Corvallis Advocate

Navigating a Psychotic Episode in Benton County January 9, 2021 Suffering a psychotic break is a nightmare scenario for many people. Watching a loved one suffer may possibly be worse. Or worse yet would be watching a loved one falling into the hole of psychosis and being unable to get the help they need because of a bureaucracy that you never expected or a system that is, for all intents and purposes, broken.  A psychosis might be the symptom of a problem, but if the person experiencing it is too medicated to explain how they came to the point of breaking, then how can the system work for them. Too often, in the process of seeking psychiatric evaluations or treatments, some people fall through the cracks of the mental health system.

Editorial: Roses and raspberries (Jan 3)

ROSE (roz) n. One of the most beautiful of all flowers, a symbol of fragrance and loveliness. Often given as a sign of appreciation. RASPBERRY (raz’ber’e) n. A sharp, scornful comment, criticism or rebuke; a derisive, splatting noise, often called the Bronx cheer. We hereby deliver: • ROSES to Will Tucker, who is riding off into the sunset after serving for 12 years on the Linn County Board of Commissioners. Tucker, for lack of a better term, has been viewed as the heart of that government body, for reasons that were on full display during 2020. One of the key accomplishments of his career was opening up the Linn County Fair & Expo Center as an emergency shelter for residents displaced by the wildfires in September. Tucker also was a key figure in securing personal protective equipment for staff at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans Home in Lebanon during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

There and back again: Charlie Fautin traveled a long way to make Corvallis his home

Charlie Fautin got into nursing to see the world, but in the end his travels led him to find a home in Oregon. As he prepares to retire at the end of the year from his position as deputy director for public health with the Benton County Health Department, Fautin looked back over his globe-trotting career. “My path,” he said, “has been non-linear.” Born and raised in Wyoming, Fautin spent two years of his childhood in Afghanistan, where his father, a zoology professor at the University of Wyoming, had gone to do some work with Kabul University. Fautin recalls meeting the Afghan royal family and turning out with the rest of the American community in Kabul to cheer the arrival of Dwight D. Eisenhower during a presidential visit in 1959.
