Off-duty cop, mob allegedly tried to break into Black teen s home: Lawsuit
ABCNews A former North Carolina police officer who was fired and criminally charged last year after he allegedly gathered a group of armed people and tried to enter the home of a Black teen who he thought was a suspect in the case of a missing person, has been sued by the victim s family Tuesday.
Attorneys for Monica Shepard and her 18-year-old son Dameon filed the civil suit in North Carolina Tuesday contending that their clients were racially profiled and terrorized by former deputy Jordan Kita, and 14 other white defendants, some of whom were armed, who said they were looking for a missing woman.
PENDER COUNTY â A Rocky Point, N.C. mother and son have filed a lawsuit against 15 people, including a now-former New Hanover County Sheriff s deputy, who they allege attempted to invade their home last year.
The lawsuit, which lists Monica and Dameon Shepard as plaintiffs, alleges that a mob of known and unknown white residents led by then-New Hanover County Sheriff s Deputy Jordan Kita attempted to forcibly enter the Shepards home in Rocky Point on May 3, 2020.
Kita was wearing his official New Hanover County Sheriff s Department uniform at the time and carrying his official sidearm, according to the lawsuit and comments at a press conference in May 2020 made by District Attorney Ben David.
It s certainly more than we re used to having, he said.
The city has averaged about 15 homicides per year since 2014, Coburn said. In 2017, Wilmington neared this year’s totals with 20 homicides. The following year, the city saw 9 homicides.
In 2020, Wilmington saw at least one homicide every month. The final three months of the year brought a total of eight homicides.
Such a wave of crime is not unprecedented, according to Coburn.
Guns a common factor in Wilmington homicides, crime
Guns are the common thread in many of Wilmington’s 2020 homicides, Coburn said. Shootings made up 18, or nearly 82%, of the city’s homicide deaths.
