Free tax service offered for elderly, low-income residents

Barbara Morris spends at least three days a week for nearly three months every year helping others at the Christian County Senior Center. A retired federal employee, Morris is one of five volunteers preparing free basic tax returns to qualified individuals through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. “You really enjoy seeing the people that you see once a year sometimes,” Morris said. “A lot of the elderly, they are just thankful that they can get (their taxes) done.” Pennyrile Allied Community Services offers the VITA program, which gives free tax help to “people who generally make $57,000 or less, individuals with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns,” according to the IRS.

Christian County Magistrates Approve Resolution To Apply For Utility Assistance

The resolution was approved unanimously by magistrates, and if the first round of funding is depleted, the county may be able to get another round of $200,000. Magistrates also approved the appointment of Matthew Baker to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport Board. Baker will take over the seat for Tony Jones, who asked to leave the board at the beginning of the month. Kenneth Bates was also re-appointed to the board after a one-year term. Both will serve on the board through December 31, 2024. The next Christian County Fiscal Court meeting will be Tuesday morning, February 23, at 8:30.

The meeting on Jan. 19 took place a day after the Martin Luther King Jr., holiday, with magistrates meeting at their regular meeting location in the fiscal courtroom at the Trigg County Courthouse. Alexander noted that the expenditures, totaling $227,858.75, were up quite a bit, but he pointed out that the total included a lot of quarterly payments, like that to the health department, for example.
