During a Wednesday news conference outside the prison, the head of the Iowa Department of Corrections called it an act of pure evil.
Registered nurse Lorena Schulte, 50, and correctional officer Robert McFarland, 46, both were killed by blunt force trauma to the back of the head, an investigator said.
Inmates Michael Dutcher, 28, and Thomas Woodard, 39, are charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and second-degree kidnapping in the attack. If convicted, they would face a life sentence without parole. The two are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
What happened in the prison attack?
Dutcher and Woodard were trying to carry out a long-discussed plan to escape when they gained access to the prison infirmary under the ruse that they were there to repair equipment, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Richard Rahn said at Wednesday s news conference.
