Health Minute: Move More Month

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s College of Nursing. According to the American Heart Association, almost half of U.S. adults aren’t active enough to maintain good health. When it comes to exercise, a little bit of effort can go a long way. Ten minutes of stretching is like walking the length of a football field. Twenty minutes of vacuuming is equivalent to walking one mile. Walking can help you maintain a healthier weight, ward off depression, and prevent heart disease. Walking can also enhance the immune system, relieve joint pain, and control cravings for sweets.

Health Minute: STD Awareness Month

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s College of Nursing. April is STD Awareness Month. Some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. One in 5 Americans have an STD. Teens and young adults account for nearly half of new cases each year. STDs can cause health issues, including infertility and cancer, but all STDs can be prevented and treated. Most can be cured. The Infectious Disease Society of America encourages people to “Talk. Test. Treat.” This means: TALK to your sexual partners and healthcare providers; TEST regularly for STDs; and, if you test positive, follow medical advice and complete all TREATment.

Health Minute: Routine Appointments During A Pandemic

It’s important to keep your routine medical and dental appointments during the pandemic. Routine appointments are an important part of preventative health care. They ensure you’re up-to-date with vaccines and medication management. There are steps you can take to keep yourself safe during appointments. Ask if there’s an option to meet with your provider virtually via telemedicine as an alternative to an in-person visit. If you have to go in person, follow CDC guidelines: wear a mask, stay six feet apart from others, wash your hands often, and avoid crowds. Remember to get your annual flu vaccine.
