State College Borough Council Approves State High Student Representative

State College Area High School now has an official student representative to State College Borough Council. During its meeting on Monday, council unanimously approved adding a representative recommended by State High student government and appointed annually by council. The position joins two student representatives to council from Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association and Graduate and Professional Student Association. State High junior Clarissa Theiss, who brought the proposal to Council President Jesse Barlow and Mayor Ron Filippelli last year, will serve as the high school’s first representative. “I’m so excited not only to serve as a representative but to continue working to promote civic education at State College Area High School,” Theiss said.

Penn State Sustainability Institute members advise UPUA on climate and sustainability action

Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association hosted Paul Shrivastava and Douglas Goodstein of Penn State’s Sustainability Institute to discuss climate and sustainability action during a meeting Wednesday night. Shrivastava — director of Penn State’s Sustainability Institute — gave a presentation that highlighted some of the ways in which students may be able to work toward sustainability, urging them to “collectively join hands.” This work, Shrivastava explained, is largely based on the United Nations’ list of 17 sustainability goals. Goodstein — associate director for student engagement at Penn State’s Sustainability Institute — urged students to use their voices to fight for climate action and invited UPUA members to become involved in “youth listening sessions.” More information on the sessions will be provided at a later date.
