Coronavirus pandemic shines a light on food insecurity at Penn State, in State College | State College News

Food insecurity has been an issue in State College and at Penn State long before the coronavirus pandemic began. But the pandemic only worsened the issues, making it easier to spot and sparking a sense of urgency in the community to help one another out. The State College YMCA, State College Food Bank, Lion’s Pantry, and members of the Student Farm at Penn State and the University Park Undergraduate Association have come together to raise awareness of the food insecurity problem on, off and around campus. Mel Curtis, the anti-hunger director of the YMCA, has organized various events before and throughout the pandemic to provide Centre County families with food in times of need. According to Curtis, food insecurity is something that isn’t “easily detected” and hard to tell if a person or family is struggling.

Penn State to host discussions, film screenings for Justice Education Week

From April 19-24, Justice Education Week will be held at Penn State. The week will feature a series of virtual events with the aim of bringing awareness to the human impact of incarceration as well as build support for transformative educational movements in a carceral setting, according to Penn State News. Here is a list of events that will be held for Justice Education Week. Monday, April 19 6 p.m. — Angela Davis, political activist and the keynote speaker of the week, will host a talk titled Education Justice: Incarceration, Carceral Education & Abolition Pedagogy. Davis s discussion will be followed by organizers who will talk about ways students can get involved with prison reform.

Penn State to host outdoor game event Finally Unplugged Fest to wrap up spring 2021 semester

Penn State Student Affairs will host the Finally Unplugged Fest, an “in-person, team-based outdoor event” on April 23 according to Penn State News. The event will take place outside the Intramural Building between 2 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Registration will be limited to 250 teams. The event will follow Penn State coronavirus precautions, and all participants and staff are required to wear masks. Students are able to sign up for numerous activities but will be expected to physically distance themselves from each team. Additionally, sanitizing stations will be set up in the vicinity throughout the day, and all Campus Recreation facilities will be closed starting at noon on April 23 in order to accommodate the size and staff of the event.
