Graffiti artist Smug paints spectacular war god mural on Carlisle West Walls

A SPECTACULAR mural depicting a Celtic-Roman god of war has slowly been taking shape on Carlisle s West Walls. Last week world renown Aussie graffiti artist Smug, based in Glasgow, spent a number of days working on a modern imagining of the deity Belatucadros, on part of the former Peter Tyson electrical store. The ancient god was worshipped by lower rank Roman officers and the indigenous Celtic population of Cumberland back when England was a province of the Roman Empire. Smug is known for his photo realism and creating images using nothing but spray cans. The artist, otherwise known as Sam Bates, doesn t give interviews, however Ben Heslop from Carlisle s Landmark Street Art was on hand to offer an explanation.

Tullie House wants its community board to have a wide and diverse representation, from the lifelong Tullie House fan to those who rarely, if ever, visit.

'A life passion'- celebrating Carlisle's street art boom as councillors vow to back it further

The city of Carlisle is now also home to an exciting burgeoning street art scene. Thanks to the work of Ben Heslop, director of Carlisle s Landmark Street Art, talents from as far afield as Austria have brightened up our streets. For Mr Heslop, bringing international artists to the city, as well as empowering local talents, is his life passion. Through my business I found myself immersed in a rich cultural scene that spreads all over the world. But where I lived, there was nothing! So I set about changing that because of the impact public art can make on a place, especially where there wasn t any.
