Student news: Shaler Area music accolades and Japanese speech contest winners

Four Shaler Area High School seniors were recognized by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) as some of the top instrumentalists in the state by being selected for its All-State ensembles. They are: • Adam Braughler: Ranked among the best French horn players in the state, Braughler has been a member of the high school Honors Wind Ensemble, earning principal chair for the last three years. He also held the position of Low Brass Section Leader for the past two years in the Shaler Area Titan Marching Band.

Musicians from Ambridge, Beaver & Moon earn all-state, national honors

Beaver High junior Rebecca Mizer qualified for the separate National Association for Music Association s All-Eastern Division Concert Band, which will include a performance at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year s Day. The NAfME All-Eastern Division includes musicians from 11 states, the District of Columbia, and Europe, who performed in a virtual festival in March. Crestwood students continue to thrive despite online learning

In the interest of safety during the global pandemic, students and faculty alike at the Crestwood School District have remained virtual for the first half of the school year. But change is on the horizon for the Comets, with a new plan going into effect in the third quarter of the academic school year, with the intention of slowly, and safely, bringing students back to in person schooling. In what Crestwood administration is calling a “phased reopening plan,” students would go back to school in groups based on grade level and required assistance. The first phase of Crestwood’s conscious reopening begins on Feb. 8, with low incidence disability students returning first. This will include life skills and autistic support students, who will be closely followed by Elementary Learning Support students on Feb. 17. Beginning in March, other students will return in a hybrid fashion starting with students grades K-2 on March 1, followed by grades 3-6 on March 8, and ending wit
