Editorial: Fair schools funding fight to get its day in court

Advocates for fair school funding in Pennsylvania are watching the calendar, but the anticipated date isn’t on the docket of the state legislature. A lawsuit filed seven years ago by parents and school districts against state government has been given a tentative trial date in September and has the potential to change the way schools are funded throughout the state. The lawsuit alleging the Pennsylvania General Assembly has violated the state’s constitution by failing to provide fair and adequate funding for public education was given a tentative trial date of Sept. 9 in Commonwealth Court in an April 1 order from Commonwealth Court Judge Renée Cohn Jubelirer.

Ed Krebs: Residents want independent representing 48th Senate District

Krebs said the closed electoral system is part of the problem. He said he earned his spot on the the special election ballot by getting 500 signatures from actual voters, not by winning the support of party insiders. When the party insiders chose who the candidates will be in a special election, the voters have no input until after they made their selection, he said. (This) narrows the possibility of candidates, so I chose to run as an independent.   Krebs said if voters choose him to fill Arnold s former seat, he does not plan to run for another term.  This is not a career move, he said.

At a recent House Democratic Policy hearing on the Progress of the Passenger Rail Restoration Project, legislative members explored that topic. The hearing was chaired by Policy Chairman Ryan Bizzarro, D-Erie, and state Rep. Joe Ciresi, D-Montgomery.   As a policy committee member, I welcomed Lawrence C. Malski, president of the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority, who testified about the restoration of passenger rail service, currently under construction in northeastern Pennsylvania.   Malski testified that over 20,000 Pennsylvania residents currently reside in northeastern Pennsylvania and commute to workplaces in northern New Jersey and New York City by bus and car. He said the dire daily and increasing congestion these commuters face on Interstate 80 threatens their ability to get to work. The commuter rail aspect of the rail restoration project would provide a safe, secure, all-weather, and reliable transportation alternative for Pennsylvania’s commuter r
