Mumia Abu-Jamal to undergo heart surgery

6 hours ago Johanna Fernández, a longtime advocate and supporter of Abu-Jamal, said that there are also concerns about the lack of information being provided to Abu-Jamal’s closest allies, and that it went against his right as a patient that he was unable to contact his loved ones for days after his hospitalization. “Think about the barbarism of a system that feels there is no right of a prisoner that the state must respect,” said Fernández, a history professor at Baruch College in New York. Alvarez, Abu-Jamal’s chosen physician, has had little access to Abu-Jamal’s current medical team and has not been informed regarding his patient’s health and the steps being taken to treat him. During Thursday’s press conference, Alvarez said he believes Abu-Jamal will undergo open heart surgery to treat his clogged arteries, but he added that demands for more information regarding his treatment have gone unmet.

Phase 2 in Erie: First COVID shots offered to general population in PA

Joseph Neff received an email Monday morning from a friend who said the 26-year-old North East Township man was now eligible, like every other Pennsylvania adult, to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Less than 24 hours later, Neff had already scheduled and received the first of his two recommended doses of the Pfizer vaccine. It s a pretty smooth process, Neff said after receiving his first dose at the UPMC Health Plan Operations Center, 380 E. Bayfront Parkway. I called Monday to schedule a time and the woman asked what date and time worked for me. I grabbed 11:15 (Tuesday) and there were no problems.

COVID in Pa : What Johnson and Johnson pause means for Pennsylvanians

After federal health officials Tuesday said they are recommending a pause in the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, Pennsylvania followed suit. The state has notified all COVID-19 vaccine providers administering the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to pause its use until at least April 20, according to a statement from the Department of Health.  Gov. Tom Wolf and state health officials learned of the federal request for a pause at the same time as the general public. The move comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced they are reviewing six reported cases of a rare blood clot found in women after receiving the one-shot vaccine.
