Pennsylvania’s Unemployment Rate at 7.3 Percent in January

Harrisburg, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) released its employment situation report for January 2021.
Pennsylvania s unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points over the month to 7.3 percent in January. The U.S. rate fell four-tenths of a percentage point from December to 6.3 percent. The commonwealth s unemployment rate was 2.5 percentage points above its January 2020 level while the national rate was up 2.8 points over the year.
Pennsylvania s civilian labor force – the estimated number of residents working or looking for work – decreased 15,000 over the month.
Pennsylvania s total nonfarm jobs were up 35,700 over the month to 5,638,100 in January, essentially reversing December s drop of 35,400. Jobs increased in 4 of the 11 industry supersectors with the largest volume gain in professional & business services (+12,100).

The Pennsylvania Department of Health added 2594 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday, pushing the state s overall total to 955,730. 43 new coronavirus-related deaths were also reported Wednesday, leaving the state with 24,439 since the pandemic began.
While Pennsylvania has now administered 3.1-million coronavirus vaccinations, Gov. Tom Wolf says there are still plenty of issues to iron out. One of the challenges, because the demand is higher than the supply, is the issue of making sure we re doing this fairly, Wolf says. Officials say vaccination providers are asking for 420,000 doses, but the commonwealth only has about 254,000 to go around.

Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed 2975 new cases of coronavirus in the state, bringing the commonwealth s overall total to 953,136. 40 new deaths attributed to coronavirus were also reported, leaving Pennsylvania with 24,396 since the pandemic began. Currently there are 1502 people hospitalized due to COVID-19. 303 of them are in the intensive care unit.
New Jersey is reporting more than 3400 additional cases of COVID-19. Gov. Phil Murphy, in a series of tweets, encouraged residents to continue following social distance guidelines and to keep hope alive.
