Pennsylvania’s Unemployment Rate Declines to 6.6 Percent in November
12/18/2020
Harrisburg, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) released its employment situation report for November 2020.
Pennsylvania s unemployment rate was down 0.8 percentage points over the month to 6.6 percent in November. Pennsylvania s rate fell below the U.S. rate (6.7 percent in November) for the first time since May 2015. The commonwealth s unemployment rate was 2.0 percentage points above its November 2019 level while the national rate was up 3.2 points over the year.
Pennsylvania s civilian labor force – the estimated number of residents working or looking for work – decreased 40,000 over the month as unemployment declined 55,000 while resident employment was up 15,000.
It has been just about a week since Gov. Tom Wolf issued his order to shut down indoor dining across the commonwealth, and the impact on industry workers is already palpable, especially in light of the rapidly-approaching holidays.
Wolf’s directive, one of several mitigation efforts put into effect on Dec. 12, dealt a substantial blow to the already heavily impacted world of restaurants and bars in Pennsylvania. While outdoor dining, food and alcohol takeout still are permitted, thousands of servers, hosts and hostesses, bartenders and other employees have found themselves unemployed or severely underemployed.
Dustie Heller has been a server at Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville for four years, and usually makes what she considers a great income. Now, she works only about a quarter of the hours she previously did.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor Industry, Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, will post the following announcement in the December 26, 2020 Pennsylvania Bulletin:
For (work) injuries occurring on or after January 1, 2021, the statewide Average Weekly Wage (and maximum weekly rate) will be $1,130 – up from $1,081.
For medical treatment rendered on or after January 1, 2021, the increase in fee schedule-tied payments will be 4.6%, up from 3.1%.
All claims handlers and medical bill repricers must be aware of these changes now and make sure they are in place as soon as January 1, 2021.
In the past, some medical bill repricers have not acted quickly enough on annual changes, resulting in countless unnecessary fee reviews and penalty petitions.
