Restrictions planned on Interstate 80 during expected New Year’s Day freezing rain, PennDOT says
Updated Dec 31, 2020;
With freezing rain in the forecast on New Year’s Day north of the Lehigh Valley, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Thursday announced a schedule of restrictions on certain interstates.
“Our team is ready and will work before and throughout the storm,” PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian said jn a news release. “Any icing presents a challenge because rain will wash away some material, and ice is less visible to motorists than snow.”
Accrual of freezing rain which falls as liquid and freezes on contact could reach above 0.2 of an inch at elevation in the Poconos, EPAWA Weather Consulting said. Icing could be moderate to moderately high in some of those areas, the Lehigh Valley forecasting business said.
