Pitt, Heinz History Center among organizations getting state grants to preserve historical documents

The University of Pittsburgh, the City of Pittsburgh and the Heinz History Center are among the organizations receiving grants from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to help preserve the documents in their archives. Thirty-one Historical & Archival Records Care grants totaling nearly $200,000 are being distributed around the state to help organizations to “improve the preservation and accessibility of historically significant records maintained by local governments, historical societies and academic institutions,” according to the Commission. The city is getting an $8,016 grant to digitize and rehouse 24 volumes of city council minute books from 1816 to 1877 and to digitize 109 volumes of minutes and legislation from former municipalities annexed by the city.

Throughout the Lancaster County region, there are hands-on classes that teach things like how to make a resurrection garden and a succulent planter. There’s also a seed swap in Elizabethtown. There also are virtual classes on topics like flower arranging plus virtual talks about growing native plants and more. The in-person events are limited to small groups and some virtual classes ship materials so don’t wait to sign up. Some of the virtual events are selling out quickly as well. PHS brings a Green Resource Center to Montgomery County

WHYY By The Green Resource Center at Norristown Farm Park, located along West Germantown Pike across from Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, will use an existing barn. (Emma Lee/WHYY) The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which produces the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, is bringing a Green Resource Center to Montgomery County. The site at the Norristown Farm Park is expected to be fully operational in the spring. “I think it’s going to be a beautiful addition to a really incredible park,” said Julianne Schrader Ortega, vice president of PHS and chief of its Healthy Neighborhoods initiative. The new center will include a 2-acre teaching farm, a greenhouse partially powered by solar energy, a wash station, community garden beds, a shading area for seedlings, and a pavilion for public programs.
