Nearly 4,800 people have accumulated $17.9 million in unpaid student fees owed to one of the 14 state-owned universities and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
For decades, efforts to get them to pay up the fees that universities charge alongside tuition, such as an activity fee or technology fee, resulted in for-profit collection agents coming after them. But no more.

HARRISBURG â Pennsylvaniaâs public university system has agreed on a strategy to address racism on its campuses by building a more diverse staff and curriculum after students of color spoke out about feeling unsafe and overlooked.
The 20-member Board of Governors voted April 15 to establish diversity, inclusion, and equity priorities by collecting data on university demographics and establishing resources for change.
âI kept thinking about all the graduates who could have benefited personally and professionally from greater faculty, staff, student, and curriculum diversity,â Denise Pearson, vice-chancellor and chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer, told the board.

Amid fresh signs of sagging statewide demand for the COVID-19 vaccine, Pennsylvania officials on Wednesday encouraged hundreds of thousands of college students to get their shots before they go home for summer.
Gov. Tom Wolf appeared in State College with the president and head football coach at Penn State University with a cameo by a freshman tight end to pitch younger people on the benefits of getting inoculated against the coronavirus.
“Penn Staters can and must demonstrate the leadership to do your part and get vaccinated,” Penn State President Eric Barron said. “This is the most important effort of our lifetime, and I call on all Penn Staters to lead now.”
