Your View: How Pennsylvania schools should spend $7 billion in federal money

Letter to the editor: Teacher Appreciation Week May 3-7

Great teachers make great public schools. When we struggled in class, our teachers were there to lend a helping hand. When our kids are having a terrible day, their teachers are ready with welcoming smiles and encouraging words. National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7. What better time could there be to say thank you to the great teachers who inspire you? Reach out to your favorite teachers to tell them what they have meant to you. Send a message of appreciation to the educators at your children’s school. Take to social media to #ThankATeacher for all they do for Pennsylvania’s students.

Propel Charter School Staff Votes To Unionize By Three-To-One Margin

A teacher leads a class at Propel Hazelwood, a K-8 school in Pittsburgh. Employees at Allegheny County’s largest charter school network have voted resoundingly to form a union. Propel Schools staff backed the move in a 236-82 vote, the Pennsylvania State Education Association said Thursday. Up to 435 staff across 13 campuses could join the bargaining unit, according to PSEA’s region advocacy coordinator, Matt Edgell. PSEA will now represent Propel employees. Eleventh-grade English teacher Conor McAteer helped to lead the union drive. He said his colleagues want to have more say in setting policies on teacher pay, scheduling, performance evaluations, and other matters.
