For more than 60 years, three generations of Maglio men have run the Station Bar and Grill, serving cheap drinks and basic eats to an evolving demographic of South Philadelphians.
Lou Maglio, who currently runs the joint owned by his mother, said the corner bar at 16th and McKean Streets never had problems with the neighbors. Until this year.
The complaints may have initially looked like newcomers clashing with old South Philadelphian mores and Maglio argues that’s the case. But even longtime neighbors say that the bar is out of hand and that the clash has escalated, with frightening results.

Pennsylvania State Police Liquor Control Enforcement Officers visited 694 licensed liquor establishments from Monday, December 28 through Wednesday, December 30 to ensure businesses are abiding by COVID-19 mitigation requirements, including the suspension of in-person service from December 12, 2020 through January 4, 2021, as outlined in the limited-time mitigation order.
Liquor Control Enforcement Officers issued 16 notices of violation and 33 warnings for failing to follow COVID-19 requirements. The governor and Secretary of Health’s orders were issued pursuant to the authority granted to them under the law, and as such they have the force and effect of law. This authority extends to all local enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania. Local law enforcement received guidance on enforcement of the various COVID-19 orders in place from the Pennsylvania State Police through the PA Chiefs of Police Association. Local police departments have discretion whether to warn or cite a business for violations. Enforcement efforts include issuing citations and fines, and possibly undertaking regulatory actions for repeat offenders.
