A state-run psychiatric hospital with a long history of struggling to employ enough workers is now so short-staffed that it risks violating federal requirements for patient care, Spotlight PA has learned.
In an emergency request, the Department of Human Services said Torrance State Hospital in western Pennsylvania was operating short-staffed essentially every day because it can’t recruit enough aides, and doing so could put funding for the hospital in jeopardy.
An outside expert who reviewed the department’s request to hire a staffing agency said its description of conditions at the hospital raised serious questions about risks for both patients and staff.

NFL stages Careers in Football Forum for HBCU students

This week, more than 150 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities attended the 2020 NFL HBCU Careers in Football Forum, the fifth of its kind.
The Forum has introduced more than 300 students and entry-level athletic department administrators to career opportunities in professional football. Participants hear from sports industry professionals and get networking opportunities. This year’s attendees represented 39 institutions.
“I’ve been honored to participate in the NFL HBCU Careers in Football Forum in person in the past and given the opportunity will continue to be involved for future years,” Falcons President Rich McKay said. “It is an amazing event that provides a great forum for brilliant individuals who bring bright and thorough questions. This is not a walk on the wild side, though it will take you to three Philadelphia sites much less visited than Elfreth’s Alley, the Liberty Bell, or Rittenhouse Square. If I find them more intriguing than those picturesque spots it is simply because this is where the city’s history lives on in some interesting twenty-first-century ways. The neighborhood, called either Spring Garden or Fairmount/Art Museum, is close enough to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the walk to begin at the museum’s Perelman Building. (You can also start at the Barnes Foundation on Benjamin Franklin Parkway and walk north, though that will take somewhat longer.)
