Casey, Tom Ridge, Ed Rendell and Tom Wolf all won re-election by significantly larger vote margins. He also wasn’t the most visionary. The public policy initiative that many remember Thornburgh for the most was being the first governor to push for an end to the state’s monopoly on liquor sales. Forty years later, Pennsylvania’s state stores are still around.
