BENNINGTON â A 68-year-old man was sentenced to up to two years in prison Friday for robbing the local Dollar General store in 2019.
Just before Robert Piatt was sentenced Friday morning, he pleaded guilty to one count of assault and robbery, according to Bennington Superior Court records.
Because he has three previous felony convictions, Piatt could have been sent to prison for up to life. But he negotiated with prosecutors for a two-year maximum, citing his active arrest warrant in Idaho, where he is expected to serve more prison time, defense attorney Rick Burgoon said after the hearing.

BENNINGTON â A Landgrove man has been ordered to abstain from alcohol and drugs and to have no contact with a woman he has been charged with assaulting on Christmas night.
Ely B. Key pleaded not guilty Monday at Bennington Superior Court-Criminal Division on eight charges, including allegations of domestic abuse and assaulting police officers. Three of the charges of assaulting an officer are felonies; the remainder, including the domestic assault charge, are misdemeanors.
Affidavits presented Monday during Keyâs arraignment indicate a chaotic scene unfolded during his arrest, with state and local police using bean bag rounds and a Taser in a lengthy struggle to subdue him.
