The sheriff’s office responded to the incident on April 9 but the state’s attorney’s office didn’t charge the woman until Tuesday, court records show. The charges were announced Wednesday, the same day the South Dakota Supreme Court heard arguments about the lawsuit filed by Sheriff Kevin Thom and another law enforcement official against Amendment A, which legalized recreational marijuana.

She faces up to six years in custody. Authorities say the children, ages 10 and 11, showed up at school after taking the edibles on April 9. The drugs allegedly impaired their ability to walk and talk and led to hallucinations. A school police officer called for medical support and the children were hospitalized overnight.

A Rapid City woman has been arrested for allowing children access to marijuana edibles, according to a Facebook post from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Sandra Pashby, 36 of Rapid City, is accused of leaving drugs where young children could access them, which ultimately were consumed by two elementary aged students on Friday, April 9, 2021. The drugs were marijuana edibles. The 10 and 11 year olds ate what looked like candy and became severely ill at school. Initially the effects of the marijuana edibles impaired the children’s ability to walk and talk.
