Box Elder man sentenced to federal prison time for robbery

Johnathan Adkins, 21, was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in federal prison for a robbery that occurred in January of 2020. Adkins, along with two other individuals, robbed the Quality Inn and Big D in Rapid City earlier this year, pointing a pistol at an employee in each establishment. He received seven years for Use and Brandishing of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence, as well as two-and-a-half years for Interference of Commerce by Robbery. Adkins was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

With Christmas and the New Year only days away, law enforcement will be ramping up their efforts – and that will be no different in the Black Hills. In preparation, the Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the National Transportation Safety Board for several campaigns, including “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” Highway Patrol is also campaigning with “Operation Safe Christmas,” to watch for impaired and risky drivers, but everyone agrees safe driving does not have to be a challenge.

Two West River individuals sentenced on methamphetamine charges

KNBN NewsCenter1 December 14, 2020 RAPID CITY, S.D. Two West River residents have been sentenced to federal prison time for methamphetamine-related charges. Daniel Gray Eagle, age 39, was sentenced on December 14 to 188 months for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine and two counts Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute. The conspiracy charge stated that Gray Eagle knowingly and intentionally conspired with others to distribute, and possess with intent to distribute, more than 500 grams of methamphetamine in South Dakota. Gray Eagle routinely traveled to Rapid City to acquire large amounts of methamphetamine, which he distributed in Eagle Butte. His first possession count came after a high-speed chance on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in January 2018, and the second from a foot pursuit in March of the same year.
