Show to offer ‘Behind The Tanks’ and ‘101 Ways To Display Shells’

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s 2021 Virtual Sanibel Shell Show will premiere on March 5-6 from noon to 3 p.m. on the club’s YouTube channel. The free show will feature more than 35 original video vignettes, a photo contest and door prizes and offer something to entertain and educate every interest.
One video will guide viewers “Behind the Tanks” at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum’s aquarium gallery. Aquarists Rebecca Mensch and Carly Hulse will host a special tour on how they keep the animals healthy and happy. Watch a menu prepared to match the diet of the mollusks, fish and coral. Explore the equipment and testing necessary to ensure that the water temperature and chemical balance is right. Sanibel voters will have several choices to pick from in the city’s upcoming March 2 election.
Six people are campaigning to take up the seats currently held by Mayor Mick Denham, who is not seeking re-election, and Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were appointed late last year to replace former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan for the interim.
The pool of candidates includes Mary Bondurant, Scott Crater, Tim Drobnyk, John Henshaw, Jason Maughan and Mike Miller. Elections held for Sanibel City Council seats are non-partisan races.

The Gulf Coast beaches are considered the best in North America for shelling, and nowhere is this more evident than along South Florida’s Lee Island Coast, a fifty-mile stretch of white, sandy coastline studded with more than 100 barrier islands.
Sanibel Island christened Costa de Caracoles or “Coast of Seashells” by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon is the crown jewel. Taking advantage of an atypical east-west orientation, this twelve-mile-long, three-mile-wide island, roughly the size of Manhattan, acts like a scoop, depositing more than 400 types of shells from lightning whelks and lettered olives to the more elusive junonia and lion’s paw onto its shores. For the best shelling, stick to the gulf-facing beaches, such as secluded Bowman’s Beach on the north end of the island.
Shell museum, Alliance for the Arts to host art exhibition

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum and Alliance for the Arts have partnered to create an art exhibition about water. From Feb. 9 to April 30, it will be on display on the museum’s second floor.
Water is the source of all life and has been an inspiration for artists, writers and philosophers around the world for thousands of years, officials reported. The exhibition will bring together scientists and artists of different media, as well as historians and authors, for an extended conversation regarding humans’ relationship and dependence upon water in all its forms. The exhibit hopes to bring interpretations and responses to humans’ infinite individual and communal connections to water.
