Behind the scenes at FOX 13 and last updated 2021-02-01 07:59:19-05 SALT LAKE CITY — For National News Literacy Week, FOX 13 pulls back the curtain and shows how news stories are created.from the very beginning. The evening shift at FOX 13 starts with an editorial call, now done over Zoom because of pandemic protocol. In the meeting, the FOX 13 team discusses events and makes a plan for the rest of the day. In Sunday s meeting, reporter Sydney Glenn pitched her idea to spotlight Vessel Kitchen and how they ve adapted during the pandemic. Melanie Porter works as an assignment editor on the weekends at FOX 13. She monitors traffic cameras, social media outlets, makes phone calls, sorts through emails and helps to keep things organized behind the scenes.

Search continues Sunday for skier buried in backcountry avalanche

It required additional avalanche mitigation efforts for crews to safely reach the location where the body of 57-year-old Kurt Damschroder, of Park City, was found at around 11 a.m. Damschroder, a long-time resident of Park City, designer and avid outdoorsman, and his friend were skiing through the backcountry area known as Square Top, along the Park City Ridgeline, on Saturday when Damschroder was fully buried by an avalanche that was triggered by the skiers at about 3:30 p.m.

I fully understand the need to close the canyon while accident victims were tended to, but question the decision to keep the canyon closed for many hours while the vehicles were extricated from the river bank.

Popular trail in Big Cottonwood Canyon gets boost with 3-year restoration project completed

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON Restoration of a popular trail in Big Cottonwood Canyon was recently completed, according to a group dedicated to the conservation of Salt Lake County s Wasatch canyons. The Cottonwood Canyons Foundation announced last week that the Mill B North Restoration Project was recently completed after three years. The Mill B North Fork Trail is by one of the most-visited trailheads in the canyon. The out-and-back trail located close to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon is nearly 10 miles in length. It also includes over 3,000 feet in elevation gain and is rated as difficult, according to AllTrails. The website points out that the path is a heavily-trafficked route that features a waterfall.
