Aside from the horrifying lead item in this week’s Best of Bill column, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis dominated the Top 5. It’s the first time in months that’s happened, but it reflects the pivotal period our community has entered with the frenzy of activity and expectations surrounding the vaccines.
In addition to our regular coverage of the coronavirus, Noozhawk managing editor Giana Magnoli has been asking readers to send in their specific vaccine questions, and she and her team have been diligently answering them.
They’ve been doing that for more than two months, and it’s been an extremely popular and valuable service. I’d call it solutions journalism at its most basic form.

California’s deserts can be magical during wildflower season. This probably isn’t one of those years, and it has nothing to do with our pandemic cancel culture. The traffic-stopping orange poppies from Lake Elsinore to the Antelope Valley likely will be no-shows because the fall-winter season has been drier than usual.
“Nothing is blooming at all,” Death Valley National Park spokeswoman Abby Wines said in an email. “Usually, bloom on the valley floor is mid-February through early April. Given that nothing is blooming yet, and that we didn’t have much precipitation in the fall and early winter, it will not be a spectacular bloom.”

BIG BEAR VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) A pair of beloved and highly-watched bald eagles in Big Bear Valley may be welcoming another possible addition to the family.
A viewer was watching the eagle cam online when he noticed Jackie was laying a second egg Thursday afternoon.
That s good news for the feathered couple, Jackie and Shadow. Last month they lost two eggs to ravens and a third was broken during the laying process.

Jackie, the female bald eagle nested up in Big Bear, has laid her fourth egg!
Friends of Big Bear Valley, the organization that runs the 24/7 Big Bear Bald Eagle nest cam, said that Jackie laid the egg just after 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Jackie s partner, Shadow, was by her side.
The organization said that this is the 1st egg of her 2nd clutch.
It was a pleasant surprise to everyone. Most had given up hope that we might see a hatching this season after tragedy struck the three previous egg Jackie laid last month.
