In a media release Friday, Interior Health identified an additional 16 cases of COVID-19 linked to the Big White Mountain community cluster.
The total number of cases identified to date is 76.
Interior Health said the investigation continues to reveal most cases are related to COVID-19 transmission that occurred within group housing, social events and gatherings.
Interior Health said of the 76 known COVID-19 cases linked to this cluster, 44 reside on Big White Mountain. Nineteen individuals have recovered, and no one linked to this cluster is hospitalized.
On Dec. 16, Big White announced it had fired employees who were in breach of a “social responsibility contract” and “health declaration” it implemented this season. Dr. Shane Barclay of the Sun Peaks Community Health Centre said the resort community 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops will inevitably see cases this winter. “It’s not a question of if, but when we’re going to start seeing positive cases,” Barclay said. His advice to Sun Peaks residents is to be proactive: isolate and get tested if they have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, which include fever or chills, cough and fatigue. “We had positive tests come back with patients with rather minimal symptoms,” Barclay said. “So, my recommendation is if you’re feeling unwell, get a COVID test. Rule it out right off the get-go.”
