To paraphrase, if we were fish, we would not complain about living in water; it would be what we were designed for. But living as humans in time, we’re never quite satisfied with how it all goes: We feel cheated by the brevity of time, while frustrated with time that seems to drag on. Have you ever had a thought like that? Suddenly facing a trial you weren’t expecting, getting a bad report out of the blue, hearing news that was unsettling as a Christian, your immediate thought is: “This isn’t God. The enemy is behind this.”
Jesus actually said this to his disciples in a parable:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them.

Virtue, morality, religion – characteristics acclaimed by three of our founding fathers as necessary for the success of the nation they helped found. Could it be that the turmoil we currently see in our nation is a result of our turning away from those three elements of character? Could it be that our prayers for peace, tranquility, civility and consolation are not being heard by the God our founders believed had a guiding hand in the founding of this nation because we have turned away from virtue, morality and religion?
God deals with people as individuals and He deals with them corporately as nations. The Bible is filled with examples of His wrath against nations. Could it be He has loosed His wrath on America for its sins?
