US President Donald Trump has vetoed congressional efforts to block $8bn in arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that his administration had authorised without the approval of lawmakers.
Wednesday s vetoes come after both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed resolutions to halt the arms deals.
The State Department bypassed Congress to push the sales through by declaring an emergency, citing growing tensions with Iran.
The Senate will vote within the next few days on whether to override Trump s veto, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

It’s the nature of politics to rally ‘round the flag when it comes to a party’s position on the major issues of the day. This is particularly true of Republicans who aspire to re-election or higher office and fear the wrath of you know who.
One way to stay on the good side of Donald Trump is an iron-fisted approach to illegal aliens, portrayed by the Grand Old Party as disreputable people possibly criminals who want to take jobs no Americans want. Rep. Doug LaMalfa can be counted among the believers.
He backed Trump’s call for the “big, beautiful” border wall that would be paid for by Mexico and cheered brass knuckles handling of those who dared cross the border. LaMalfa reaffirmed his position last month when he voted against HR 6, the Biden administration’s attempt to reform part of our broken immigration laws.

Marijuana is currently listed as a Schedule 1 illicit substance by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), but Schumer and several other Democratic senators say they will be bring a legalization bill to the Senate floor shortly. Schumer says he supports both decriminalization and legalization, words he uses interchangeably.
Acknowledging an ongoing DOJ investigation against him, Gaetz told Axios, I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know when I was a single guy. Gaetz also emphasized that he was absolutely confident that none of the women in his past were underage. The allegations of sexual misconduct against me are false. They are rooted in an extortion effort against my family for $25 million ⦠in exchange for making this case go away, he told the outlet.
Why did Al Franken resign?
On November 16, 2017, conservative talk-radio host Leeann Tweeden alleged in a blog post and an interview with her radio station, 790 KABC, that Franken forcibly kissed her on a 2006 USO tour during a rehearsal for a skit. She wrote, I said OK so he would stop badgering me. We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his ton
