MN House Democrats Again Try to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

MN House Democrats Again Try to Legalize Recreational Marijuana House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler has authored a bill for cannabis legalization and criminal record expungement. It is the same bill he introduced last year, which did not get much traction. He says it would set up a regulatory board, create a licensing system, and create an opportunity for small business owners. Retailers would have to be licensed, they would have to be stand-alone businesses, and go through a rigorous application process.  We d make sure that one owner can t own the whole marketplace. Passage of the bill is a longshot with Senate Majority Leader

The Mississippi Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments in a lawsuit filed by Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler that challenges the initiative process that legalized medical cannabis in the state, according to an AP News report. The court issued an order Jan. 28 that schedules the hearing for April 14, the news outlet reported. Butler filed the complaint in late October, just one week before Election Day, to challenge the petition process that qualified Initiative 65, the state’s medical cannabis legalization measure, for the ballot.

Minnesota Takes Another Shot At Legalizing Marijuana

Minnesota Takes Another Shot At Legalizing Marijuana Justin Sullivan/Getty Images House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, has put together a bill for pot legalization, as well as, criminal record expungement.  Winkler tried introducing this bill last year with not much success. In his bill he spells out setting up a regulatory board, licensing system and opportunities for small business.  Retailers would have to be licensed, they would have to be stand-alone businesses, and go through a rigorous application process.  We d make sure that one owner can t own the whole marketplace. Unfortunately, the bill doesn t stand much of a chance of passing, since State Senate Republicans have little interest in passing it.  Sort of ironic, in my opinion, if anyone needs to take a few puffs once in awhile, it s State Senate Republicans.

Minnesota bill calls for proof copper-nickel mining is safe

State lawmakers and environmental groups have unveiled a “Prove it First” law for introduction in the Minnesota Legislature that would require scientific proof that copper-nickel mines could safely operate and close before being permitted, sparking backlash from Iron Range mining companies and interest groups. The legislation faces an uphill battle to gain significant traction in the Republican-led Senate or the Democrat-controlled House, which last session rejected bills aimed at new copper-nickel regulations from reaching their respective floors, and underscores the stark differences in priorities among lawmakers in the nation’s only divided state government. DFL Duluth Sen. Jen McEwen is the lead author of the bill, which would require proof that a similar mine has operated in the U.S. for at least 10 years, and has been closed for 10 years, without pollution. A similar law was passed in neighboring Wisconsin in 1998. Lawmakers repealed it in 2017.
