The elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly next year will be the first since the passing of the State’s dominant political leaders of the past three decades J.Jayalalithaa who led the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) from 1989 to 2016, and M.Karunanidhi who led the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from 1969 to 2018. Their passing potentially changes the political terrain. The AIADMK’s support, which depended crucially on charisma under the leadership of both M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa, is less sustainable as no credible successor has emerged. B
