The driver, 39-year-old Shannon Leader, attempted to negotiate a corner while still at this high rate of speed. Tire marks show that Leader lost control, hitting curbs and shrubbery. Completely out of control, Leader and her passenger collided with the large steel pole housing the sign. An investigation ensued and Leader was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
