Attack on Doctor: IMA Assam unit urges govt to fast track trial of attackers

Assam police arrested 24 people in connection with an assault on a doctor by a mob in Hojai on Tuesday. He was attacked by the mob after a COVID-19 positive died. In another incident on Wednesday, four people were arrested in Cachar after they attacked a medical team and prevented the team from conducting tests.
Following the brutal attack on a doctor, the Assam unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urged the government to book the attacker, arrange a trial in fast track, and deploy armed security forces in medical facilities failing which IMA will boycott all non-essential hospital services from Thursday onwards.

The mere arrest of 24 attackers allegedly involved in the crime is not going to prevent the recurrence of such a barbaric incident. Strong punishment must be meted out by existing laws to deter others from indulging in such criminal act.
