An Oradell police officer stole prescription medications from a secure drop box designed for the public to safely dispose of drugs, authorities charged.
Jeffrey Peters, 41, of Hawthorne “gained access on several occasions and removed prescription narcotics” from the locked drop box in the police department lobby, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said Tuesday.
Peters, who joined the department in 2016, was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the charges, the prosecutor said.
He was released pending a Feb. 10 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on theft and illegal drug possession charges.

A Garfield school bus aide and a jailed Wallington man awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting a pre-teen were charged with contacting the victim.
Floridaliz DeJesus, 56, was charged with contempt of a court order after she reached out to the victim on behalf of Pedro Perez, 31, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said Friday.
Detectives from Musella’s Special Victims Unit arrested Perez a year ago Saturday (Jan. 23, 2020) after city police received a tip and alerted them.
He has remained held in the Bergen County Jail since then, charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and child endangerment.

UPDATE: Authorities on Tuesday night identified a Mahwah retiree who they said stabbed his wife dead with a kitchen knife after her morning shower.
Dieter R. Zimmerman, 73, called police around 7:45 a.m. from the couple s home on Indian Field Court, a townhouse development off Belgrove Drive near the Rockland border, to tell them what happened, authorities said.
Township police found Zimmerman with “several scratches and a bleeding cut on a finger” and his 69-year-old wife, Jaquelin, on a floor in an upstairs bathroom adjacent to the master bedroom, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
She d been stabbed several times in the upper body, responders said.
Police say NJ man stabbed wife to death with butcher knife
MAHWAH Bergen County prosecutors have charged a 73-year-old township man with the brutal murder of his wife using a butcher-style kitchen knife.
Mahwah police responded Tuesday morning before 8 a.m. to a call of domestic violence at a home on Indian Field Court.
Arriving officers found the body of 69-year-old Jaquelin Zimmermann in an upstairs bathroom, next to to the house s master bedroom. She had been stabbed multiple times, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Police also found Dieter Zimmermann with several scratches and a bleeding cut to one of his fingers, Musella said.

A New Milford driver who sped off after his vehicle struck and critically injured a pedestrian in Palisades Park was arrested after witnesses got his license plate number, authorities said.
Nicholas Sodano, 57, was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck the 53-year-old woman shortly before 1:30 p.m. last Thursday outside the Chase Bank building on Bergen Boulevard, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
The victim, who was found on the side of the roadway with several injuries, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where her condition worsened, responders said.
She remained in critical condition Tuesday, Musella confirmed.
