A distraught widower jumped to his death from a Cliffside Park high-rise on New Year s Day, authorities confirmed.
The 86-year-old man, who d lost a daughter to suicide, left a check for another daughter from the recent sale of a home, they said.
He then went out onto the deck and over the side of his 12th floor condo in the rear of Winston Towers 200 off Palisade Avenue just after 5 p.m. Friday, they said.
Borough police were joined by the Bergen County Sheriff s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence, and the Bergen County Medical Examiner s Office.
UPDATE: An early morning house fire on Monday killed a Lodi resident, authorities confirmed.
The fire broke out in the rear of the two-story Westminster Place home shortly before 6 a.m., apparently from a candle left burning, and quickly went to two alarms.
Four residents and two guests reportedly made it out safely. Two were treated for minor injuries, responders said.
A Wallington firefighter later found the body of 25-year-old Ezequiel Gonzalez, who family friends said lived there with his mother, her fiancé and his daughter.
A resident said she didn’t know why he “didn’t jump out the window” to the roof next door.

An emotionally troubled River Edge man ran naked and bleeding from Hackensack Cemetery on Tuesday after apparently trying to dig up a grave there, authorities said.
Temperatures had barely topped freezing when a police officer working a traffic detail on Kinderkamack Road outside the Madison Arms apartment complex spotted the 31-year-old man as he emerged from behind the cemetery near the River Edge border and Route 4 shortly before 10:30 a.m., they said.
He was bleeding, apparently from digging with his hands in the cold ground, responders said.
The man was taken to New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus for treatment and a psychological evaluation, they said.

A struggle erupted when a Passaic County man broke into a Washington Township residence and assaulted an elderly homeowner over a drug debt, authorities said.
Salvatore Navarra, 49, of Woodland Park broke into the Manhattan Avenue home near Hoover Avenue on Sunday to settle a score with the woman’s 60-year-old son, Capt. John Calamari said.
Navarra assaulted the man’s mother, then struggled with the son before fleeing, Calamari said.
Officers provided medical treatment to the victims. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
Police later arrested Navarra and charged him with robbery, aggravated assault and burglary.
